I’m a first year associate and perpetually concerned I’m going to get fired bc I feel like my work product isn’t at the level it should be. Does anyone have an idea of how easy/ hard it is to get fired?

Anyone hiring at the experienced associate or senior associate level for any supply chain consulting or industry positions?
2.5YOE and was recently laid off from a startup due to lack of business need.

Does anyone else feel like they make sloppy mistakes and you’ve had more than one informal discussion about it? I feel like I’m a really bad junior associate but I’m doing my best and I just don’t want to get fired.

Is it normal to be threatened to be fired after making mistakes that you had no idea were mistakes in the first place?
I’m a junior litigation associate at a small firm, and the managing partner says things like “you aren’t providing value to the firm” or “you’re being paid to avoid mistakes like these” when I make mistakes due to, what I believe, to be a lack of guidance and instruction. As in, they could be easily avoided with a “please keep in mind X” or something like that. Thoughts?

I am the only Black lawyer at my boutique law firm and the imposter syndrome/weight of it is really starting to weigh on me. I’ve been here two years. My reviews have mostly been fine but it does feel like I am judged harder than my peers and given less responsibility. It doesn’t help that the only other Black associate was fired after only a few months at the firm. I think I have to leave the firm but I guess seeking advice/inspiration/helpful anecdotes. Much appreciated.

I was working as an Associate Consultant with ZoomRx in the Business Analysis team. I was handling multiple high velocity end-to-end projects.
I have a total experience of around 4 years of which close to 2.5 years are in the consulting space. I intend to continue my career in the same line i.e as a consultant.

5th y associate. I am overall happy at firm. Firm laid off some associates lately, froze hiring (wasn’t doing that well before covid). I’ve always kept busy and I don’t think I am at risk. I‘d like to try to get pregnant in the next 2 years. I think it’d be easier for me to do it at this firm (people know me and they’ll be supportive?) but on the other hand I am told it’d get much harder to change job as a 6th or 7th year. Terribly afraid to get “stuck” and miss out on better firm. Thoughts?

The junior associates on my team made a gigantic mistake I could not fix in time (despite my best efforts). I feel like my head is going to roll because I was the senior associate shepherding the assignment for the three senior partners I work with. I am planning to reach out to the three partners to ask to debrief. But is there anything I can start thinking about or doing right away in case I do get fired in that convo? What do you wish you knew about getting fired?

How are intense are background checks at b4? Interviewing and worried that if I do get an offer firm will find out I put I’m a manager when my technical title was associate. I’m just a lowly associate. Can someone explain staffing and layoff models. Why’s my firm firing 10 people and then re hiring 8 people. Wouldn’t it make more sense to just reduce salary and attempt to retain people. Just trying to understand the logic

Does anyone else feel constantly anxious that they're about to be fired? I'm a mid level associate. I've been at my firm 6 months, my work has been good, but hours are lacking due to covid. Just can't shake this fear and it's making it hard to focus on work, so it's a vicious cycle

I was fired today. What do I do next? I’m a third year associate at a “boutique” firm. Although I knew my performance wasn’t good and I was on thin ice, I was never given any formal warning, so I was caught off guard when they called me and just fired me, effective immediately. What firms are hiring? I most recently was an Associate who got laid off due to pandemic a few months back. Really eager to get back into things but unfortunately have run into bad luck (firms laying off, hiring freezes) during my job search.

Looking for advice: have an offer to start at PwC S& as a senior associate. However, I now have a 5 wk old daughter and am concerned about travel during and after the pandemic. Longer work hours, missing milestones, and news about recent layoffs at the firm also bother me. Have a stable and a bit boring job right now in Industry. So, is the move worth it? And for any parents, is it worth missing those early years and milestones for the possibility of increased pay?

Now that Baker McKenzie announced associate layoffs, do we think other firms will follow?

Any advice for lateraling as first-year business lit associate? I’m not getting any work at my current firm due to partner hoarding and overstaffing. Can I lateral this early or should I wait until I’m inevitably fired for low hours? If I should lateral now, what reasons for leaving should I give interviewers? Should I tell the truth or will it look bad on me?

How much is typical severance pay if laid off? I’ve heard of numbers between 1 and 6 months but interested in personal anecdotes. For context I’m a mid level associate, so been with my firm for a few years. Haven’t been laid off yet but it’s likely to come in the next couple of months. It wouldn’t be due to COVID and therefore wouldn’t be part of a mass layoff - rather, due to a mix of good and bad reviews and due to the group being slower (even pre-COVID) so my hours are consistently lower.

Laid off from AMLaw200 firm due to coronavirus. Had great grades first year of law school. Top of class. Able to secure summer associate position at this firm, led to first year associate position. But I did poorly after the first year of law school and graduated below 3.0 gpa. Do I have a shot at another big law firm? Seems that so many place an emphasis on grades rather than relevant experience. *sigh*

Recently laid off at mid-sized NYC real estate litigation firm (first year associate making $120k before cuts in April, then $112k). I was invited to interview at a small firm and asked salary requirements. Should I give a range or specific number?

Sebior associate just got stealth fired from a V10 (i.e., there's no business case to promote you in October out of the associate pool because of COVID). Will likely be given a formal recommendation to look elsewhere in September but it seems clear their mind is made up. Any advice? Is there any value in considering an employment lawyer re severance etc? Not sure whether to apply now for jobs ideally starting early next year or to wait and take some time off completely.

I have until July 24th to find a job or I will have to start a new educational program or leave the US.

Leaving the US is personally not a viable option.
