Layoffs

Was laid off in April after 6 months and took a new job a month ago out of desperation. The work I’m doing isn’t interesting and I’m just overall very unhappy with the culture. Is it too soon to leave?

Can we try to be a bit less hyperbolic and check our facts when we’re talking about who got fired
vs laid off?

Fired: You unforgivably fucked up.
Laid off: We can’t monetarily afford to keep you.

Another one of my friends was laid off today :/ On the plus side, their company is giving them full pay & health benefits for four months & letting them keep any equipment they had. (100% not an ad agency.) I’m so bummed for them, but honestly I’m secretly low key jealous and wish I could just take a sabbatical from my agency job with that sort of severance package. I’m grateful for my job during this time, but this industry is burning me out. I can’t remember the last time I was happy.

People on here seem to post about having been laid off whether they were fired or laid off. I pass 0 judgment, but does anyone else feel like there’s not a single person who comes on here and says he/she was fired. I would completely understand this language if this forum were not anonymous, but what’s with this, considering we’re all anonymous?

I know some actually were laid off, but for the others, are people just delusional or somehow embarrassed even though anonymous?

How did your agency handle layoffs? All-agency meeting before they started? After they ended? Both?

Kinda sorta trying to predict if I’m losing my job tomorrow.

Has anyone been successful in negotiating more severance? I’ve been offered a month, but I don’t think I can survive just on it. Only have 2 months saved up.

If you accept a salary reduction in these times in good faith, and then are laid off and your severance pay is based not on your original salary but this new one, then your company knew this in advance and may well have violated labor laws. Call a lawyer. They will not charge you if they do not recoup your money.

Consumer spending is way down. Ad agencies are having layoffs. Are we the canary in the coal mine for a larger nationwide trend? Should I be buying gold or just take off my tinfoil hat?

As bad as being laid off is, one of my biggest fears about someday possibly reaching a leadership role in an agency is the reality having to let people go. It’s never really appropriate to complain about since the person let go is the much more sympathetic figure, but does anyone who’s been on the other side of that conversation feel like talking about the stress and difficulty of being the one dropping the ax?

When we tell other agencies/employers you were laid off (which is the truth) do you recruiters and employers believe us? Or do you think we’re lying and that we were actually fired?

why many people have been laid off recently? I have 4 friends who had to pack their stuff this week(I don't have many friends FYI) This stresses me out.

My mother got laid off & it breaks my heart to see her so defeated. Someday, I knew I would be supporting them, but never thought it would be now.

It feels so good when your best friend is your senior manager and you build a case against a less senior manager then he is fired. Sucks but feels so good.

My friend started a job as an account executive in early March, just got laid off today. Ouch.

Avoidance of travel is such a double edged sword. I'm traveling (personal, moving) for the first time in months and I feel awful for the helpful, hard working and professional flight crews that are working through this under the spectre of layoffs. Sometimes it's small like an extra drink, but I have countless times it's been a phone falling out of my pocket under seats or calling with customer care internally if something goes wrrong.

Bench time is going to suck for the next few months.... Layoffs???

I have been in consulting for a while and thinking about switching for another role. I have been very disappointed with the recent layoffs. Leadership only seem to care about their numbers. Its not worth putting up with politics and incompetent leadership. I would rather take my talent and hard-work somewhere else. The current consulting model only seem to favor those who play politics or get lucky to be part of a good leadership circle. What are your thoughts?

Most likely will be laid off next month. Such a sinking feeling because you know it’s coming but leadership doesn’t have the backbone to give a clear answer. This is a tough pill to swallow.

I work at an NGO where I am overworked & grossly underpaid. After a year on the job search, having been a finalist for multiple positions, none panned out & I am burnout and possibly severely depressed. I doubt COVID will make things any better. Throughout, I realized that providing a rapid response to horrible things/everything broke me & I'm not clear if I want to keep working in either field. Is it normal for other NGO's to burn through comms people like this? How do you cope?

I'm aware that the CAIA is not as popular in Asia compared to the CFA. From my knowledge, there are no CAIA holders in my current firm within the Asian region, despite dealing with alternative investments.
