Is there a wrong time to quit?

Started in audit at Big 4 less than a year ago and I already feel burned out. I was planning on staying for a few years and then moving to private accounting and getting a job with better pay, better hours, etc. But at this point, I don’t think I want to work in accounting long term. Is it bad to quit a job I’ve been at for less than a year? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ah, I forgot to say this... I used to think that there’s a perfect time to quit.. (of course it depends which country you’re in, when are the promotion rounds)..

I’ll use my current country as an example because they “promote” associates to Senior after 2 years. Then it takes between 2-3 years (from Senior to get to Manager).

Year 1 - trial
Year 2 - stay because you’ll be a senior towards the end
Year 3 - perfect time to quit
Year 4 - can still quit
Year 5 - why not get promoted to manager then consider quitting after half year/1 year of working as a manager?

This is pretty spot on

You probably won't find something with better pay but you will with better hours. If you do one more year it's probably better

I don’t agree. Quit and jump around. Industry will always pay better.

Based on the information you shared, no. It’s okay to quit this early. As long as you give enough notice (what’s on your contract) and if you are nice, then also give more than enough notice. But it also depends on how long can your next employer wait for you? Or are you going to have a break from work? Normally at associates level, 1 month is a good notice period and usually companies are willing to wait for a month (before finally onboarding with your new employer).

When I moved from one PwC office to another PwC office, I gave 6 months of notice (surely more than enough because required notice is 2 months). I was a senior associate back then and I told all the partners I’m working that I need their help on 2 things: 1) promotion to manager in the next 3 months and 2) move to another country in the next 6 months.

In the US, it’s 2 weeks. Check your employment contract

like

Just sack up until you make senior and then leave when you have better exit opps

like

Of course find something before you quit. But like I said above, 1st year is a trial year and better quit and find something else than another 1 or 2 years wasted. All the best! 🙂

If you're not happy look for other opportunities, just make sure what you leave for is what you want not what's available.

I've known people who left before senior who were much happier and ones who were more miserable compared to audit.

Also, a one off on your resume is okay to have. Consistently leaving jobs after a year is when it can get red flagged.

Best of luck!

My advice is if you are not enjoying what you are doing in accounting. With the time you do have with the company I would network with people in advisory and tax and see what they do if they enjoy it and if it is something your interested if it is then try a rotation I personally don’t like audit and I have been networking my butt off so I can jump to advisory services
