Why do people switch from one Big 4 firm to another? I mean, we all do similar work. But I’ve known multiple people come to EY from another Big 4, or leave for another Big 4. What are the reasons?

Sometimes it’s like the work / hate particular people

Well, not all Big four offices are created equally. Some people will change firms because they are moving to a new area and the office in that area does not have a good reputation or that market isn’t large enough and the office is not the biggest/best in that area. And like the other guy said, 90% of the time it is all about the money.

I was stuck on a job another firm that I couldn’t get off of. Went to the other firm to move industries.

Also green card process - I know a few people switched on a condition that the firm will start green card process within a year.

I see it time and again, people leave managers (leaders) not firms. Motivation may be sweetened if there is a promotion and / or raise included in a move.
Money is certainly nice, but not everything. Some people may make work horrible but would you really stay for more money? Health and well-being are important as are family and friends.
And promotion, you can only move so often and get promoted each time before your lack of skills and / or experience come up.

I’m doing it to switch service lines quickly, and because I see more happiness than what I am doing now (the city I am in sucks and so do the people now that the mass exodus occurred after busy season). Not to mention, better benefits where I’m going. Student loans are a thing for me

They didn’t get promoted and they switch to get the title

I had a toxic team leader at a small Big 4 office, and had to travel a lot. Switched to another more established firm in my city/region and got paid more, travel less, and am part of a much better team.

If only about the money - you are probably in wrong profession. Don’t get me wrong - money matters and makes life easier but it can’t be just about the money

Currently stuck on the same engagement for most of my 2 years at EY (large year round audit with no senior so they basically groomed me eventually be THE senior on that engagement). Currently in talks with 2 competing B4.

Yeah - City specific differences in some form or another. Which may mean their current people suck in some way or they want more money

Advice needed: I started with a small company ~6 months ago and one of the big selling points for me to take the job was to get my clearance back. I previously had a TS but left the public sector for ~a year which made it inactive. I was told by the recruiter several times that they would put me in to have my TS reinstated but if it couldn’t be, Secret at minimum. Fast forward 6mo and I received a clearance lower than Secret due to the nature of work. (Cont in comments)

I feel guilty but also feel like I should have asked for $ to give them access.
